Kiln-dried logs are pieces of wood that have been fired in a purpose-built kiln. The purpose of heating the logs is to remove impurities and preserve more fuel without burning away the important fibres along the wood. Heating the logs dries out the moisture that is held inside and helps to preserve the log itself so that it can be stored for a long time. Increasing the efficiency of the logs not only helps preserve them but it is also more friendly to the environment. We typically use kilns to dry out the wood, as leaving them to air-dry could take up to six months before the logs would be ready for efficient burning.
Kiln-dried logs are more efficient than alternatives, which will mean that fires made with kiln-dried logs will burn much hotter for longer periods of time. Not only does this mean a cheaper fuel bill and minimum wood storage needed, but it also creates a low-maintenance type of fire as opposed to one where you’d need to keep assessing and adding more wood to the area. It usually takes you around 3-4 non-dried logs to produce the same heat as just one kiln-dried log.
