Preparing Your Garden For Summer
Posted on - 01.04.22With summer just around the corner, it's time to make sure that your garden is prepared and ready to be enjoyed! After all, you don't want to miss the bit of summer sun that we get here in the UK because you didn't get your garden ready in advance! So how can we help here at D Price & Sons!
Getting The Soil Ready
Here in Stoke on Trent, the biggest issue we have in our gardens is that we don't have nice soil that encourages plants and flowers to grow. We have clay. It can get sticky, you can get bogged down, and it's not pleasant. So why not look at digging our your borders and replacing it with high-quality topsoil right here in Stoke-on-Trent.
The average planted border only needs between 100mm and 200mm of nutrient-filled soil to successfully flourish. So just digging down this far can go a long way in getting some wonderful flowers into your garden. Or even surround your borders with railway sleepers to create a slightly raised border, and top off the soil that is already there. Plus you get a lovely rustic border!
If your lawn is looking a bit worse for wear, where the grass is thinning and patches of dirt have taken over, spreading a nice thin layer of topsoil over the existing lawn and topping it with quality grass seed can help make all the difference. Now is also a great time of year to do this as the frosts are behind us, but the hot summer sun hasn't landed just yet!
It's Not All Plants And Greenery
While many of us absolutely love a green garden, having too much green can sometimes just be a bit much. So why not break it down with something a little lower maintenance, but still nice and colourful. Something along the lines of decorative gravel perhaps?
With a variety of colours to choose from, decorative gravel can make a huge difference in your garden, and the impact can change depending on how and where you use it. Here are a couple of the favourites we have heard from our customers:
Planted gravel border - so once you've added your fresh topsoil to your border, and planted up, fill in the spaces between your flowers with some wonderful gravel. The lightness of Cotswold stone makes your plants pop!
Gravel borders - For many people whose lawn goes right to the fence, or under the hedge, the most annoying part of garden maintenance is trying to get the perfect cut line along the edge. A gravel edge removes that annoying edge. Just try not to mow your gravel!
Gravel patios - Not everyone likes the appearance of a traditional slab patio. We want something with a bit of depth and colour. So why not create your own with a wonderfully thick layer of decorative gravel. Our favourite for this is the plum slate.

The Firepit
While it may be warmer in the summer evenings, when it does start to cool off, not enough to send you and your friends and family indoors, but enough to add a chill, why not throw a log on the fire?
Many homes now have some form of firepit in their garden, with some having a chiminea, others having them sunk into the floor and others a freestanding metal log burner. So why not make the most of it and stock up ready on kiln dried logs from Stoke on Trent before the weather gets you chilly!
