Should I Be Using Topsoil In Winter?

Top Dressing Your Lawn
In the winter, our gardens tend to have a hard time. This includes your lawns. The best way to help your lawn through this period of bad weather is to top-dress it with topsoil.
For this, you will need to prepare your lawn. Any preparation is best done in the autumn, so any time now will be fine. You will first need to remove as much thatch and moss as possible. Head over to your local store for a quality moss killer.
After giving your moss killer a chance to work, you will then need to rake and aerate your lawn. There's no need for a fancy aerator, you can simply use a garden fork every foot or so, pushed in a few inches.
Once this is complete, you can use our Topsoil in Stoke on Trent, to top-dress your lawn, you will want to ensure you use our loose topsoil to avoid clumps and disperse this evenly across your lawn. You want to use enough to fill your aerated holes, but not too much to smother your lawn as this can have an adverse effect.
Levelling Your Lawn
When it comes to levelling your lawn, the advice varies depending on who you speak to. Some gardening experts will say that you should only do this during the spring or autumn, with others stating that winter is ideal. Here at D Price, we have taken the advice that winter is ideal, and here's why.
Levelling your lawn helps to even out any lumps and bumps, creating a nice smooth space. It also means that mowing your lawn gets significantly easier. All that this requires is the use of topsoil to fill in any craters in your lawn. How deep these are will determine if you need to sow fresh lawn seed.
When using topsoil to level out your lawn, you want to ensure that you are not simply spreading it across the whole surface of your lawn. You will want to focus this in places that are uneven. You can use a roller to compact your soil to ensure an even finish.
However, you will want to then allow a few winter rainfalls to wash some of this topsoil into the ground below, before checking how level you are again as you may need to repeat the process a couple of times over the winter. This will then mean that your ground is nice and level at the start of spring, which is the ideal time to sow fresh lawn seed.
If you have only needed to add an inch or two of topsoil, you should not need to re-seed, however, anything deeper than this the grass will have a header time to penetrate and will need fresh seed.
Remember not to over compact your topsoil as you still want your grass seed to root in the area. You can always add a thin layer of loose topsoil just prior to seeding if required.
